چکیده

We provide an overview of some of the interface-tracking and interface-capturing techniques we developed for finite element computation of flow problems with moving boundaries and interfaces. This category of flow problems includes fluid–particle, fluid–object and fluid–structure interactions; free-surface and two-fluid flows; and flows with moving mechanical components. Both classes of techniques are based on stabilized formulations. The interface-tracking techniques are based on the deforming-spatial-domain/stabilized space–time (DSD/SST) formulation, where the mesh moves to track the interface. The interface-capturing techniques, developed primarily for free-surface and two-fluid interface flows, are formulated typically over non-moving meshes, using an advection equation in addition to the flow equations. The advection equation governs the evolution of an interface function that marks the location of the interface. We also highlight some of the methods we developed to increase the scope and accuracy of these two classes of techniques. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Finite Element Methods for Fluid Dynamics with Moving Boundaries and Interfaces

We provide an overview of the finite element methods we developed in recent years for computation of fluid dynamics problems with moving boundaries and interfaces. This class of problems include those with free surfaces, two-fluid interfaces, fluid–object and fluid–structure interactions, and moving mechanical components. The methods developed can be classified into two main categories: interfa...

Interface-Tracking and Interface-Capturing Techniques for Computation of Moving Boundaries and Interfaces

As a category of challenging flow problems, flows with moving boundaries and interfaces, includes fluid–particle, fluid–object and fluid–structure interactions; free-surface and two-fluid flows; and flows with moving mechanical components. To address the challenges involved in computation of this category of problems, we developed a number of interface-tracking and interface-capturing technique...

On the Displacement-Stress Continuous Finite Elements

For the analysis of composite media, three different compatible and mixed finite element formulations are presented which apriori enforce the continuity of stresses as well as displacements at the element interfaces. The formulations are applied for the analysis of hi-material interfaces in two problems often encountered in the field of orthopaedic biomechanics, that is the fixation analysis in...

Stabilized Space-time FEM and its Applications to Free-surface Flows

Fluid flow simulations that involve deforming domains, in the presence of one or more moving boundaries or fluidfluid interfaces, continue to present unique challenges, and form one of the frontiers of computational science. Freesurface flows in particular involve the motion of the fluid interface which is unknown at the outset of the simulation. Thus, both the domain and the flow field are par...
